6/11/2023 0 Comments War war never changes![]() ![]() So, TL DR- The “war” in the narration isn't meant to just mean war as in countries fighting each other, but rather the inherent conflict in human existence. In Fallout games, your character is stuck in a maelstrom that is the result of previous “wars” (both the big ones and the little ones) and also the “wars” of their own making, and through the game, your character will further bring about changes to the world around them. And while how these are occurring might change (rifles instead of swords, exchanging money for goods instead of simply bartering, etc.), the ultimate results have never changed: there are consequences to these actions- your spouse gets to decide what you are watching on TV, you find your wallet 120 dollars lighter, a particularly angry person decides to key your car over how you took “their” parking spot. And, in some ways, we are in “wars” every day, since almost everything we do is in some ways a conflict with winners, losers, and consequences, no matter how mundane: an argument with a spouse, an attempt to preorder something before it runs out (something Fallout fans know all too well), trying to get into a good parking spot, etc.Īll of these are, in a way, a type of war. There is economic warfare, cultural warfare, wars of ideas, wars for hearts and minds, scientific “wars” on diseases like cancer or HIV, etc. Not all wars, after all, are fought with violence. You see, although Fallout takes place in a a post-apocalyptic tomorrowland, what you and everyone else is doing is ultimately no different than what would have been happening in any setting: being in conflict with others. While on the surface this seems to just be a cool phrase, in reality it tells a lot about the series itself and what you are doing in it. This is the catchphrase of the Fallout series and it is usually spoken by Ron Perlman of Hellboy and Sons of Anarchy fame (although when he first said it, he was most famous for his role in the Beauty and The Beast TV series, to give you an idea of how long this series has been around). This is from an explanation of Fallout I'll probably post in full for newbies once I finish it, but it's a good explanation of what I think the phrase means:įirst off: War.
